The Grapes Bistro

October 2014

The Grapes in East Calder, now called The Grapes Bistro, has recently changed hands and is now run by an enthusiastic new manager – David Philip, who stays locally in East Calder, took over in September and has lots of ideas and plans for the future of the pub. I caught up with him to find out what those plans are. Aged 25, he is full of energy and is clearly passionate about The Grapes Bistro and the potential he sees for a real community hub here.

“I want to get the community spirit back in this pub, to get the hustle and bustle back,” he says. He is aiming to transform it into a pub that appeals to everyone in the community, where families can come for a good meal, where there is regular evening entertainment that has a broad appeal, a venue for parties and special events. In other words, a real hub for the community. “It's not just my pub, it is the local community's pub” declares David and he hopes that the community will come and support it and make it their own.

A major interior refurbishment is planned for next year, but in the meantime The Grapes Bistro is open 7 days a week and offers something for everyone. Food is served from 12pm – 8pm daily by local chef Jinty and the team, and the entertainment schedule includes Friday night disco and karaoke, Thursday quiz night and Saturday evening entertainment that is a mixture of shows with universal appeal – sometimes live music, sometimes a comedian for example. The plan is to join the pool league in the near future, as well as darts and bingo, and poker nights will also be set up.

If you're partial to tea and scones, The Grapes Bistro is also the perfect place to catch up with friends over afternoon tea, as they do teas, coffees and home-baking.

With Christmas approaching David and the team have arranged a Christmas dinner menu and are taking bookings now for the festive season. They also do catering for birthdays, weddings, funerals or any special event.

David already has a local business background - at the tender age of 13 he started his own mobile disco business, Sounds Good Discos, which is still running. He has a sales background working for various companies locally and when the opportunity to take on the Grapes came up he was keen to seize it with both hands and transform it into his vision of what a family-friendly, community pub could be.

Do come along and see what it is going on at your local pub, you'll get a warm welcome from David and the team.
